Would you allow cities to ignore federal law? “No.”
It may seem surprising, but that was Joe Biden, back in 2007, during the George W. Bush administration.
In those days, the then senator and Democratic presidential candidate spoke harshly about sanctuary cities.
He warned that in these cities the stores ended up closing and the cities themselves became “garbage containers.”
So how can the same man (now serving as president) have brought America to the state we are in now?
How serious that situation is became clear this week with the statement from Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
Abbott’s statement on Wednesday should not be seen as passing news, but as a detonation under the US body politic. That he felt the need to do so tells us everything about the situation.
“The federal government has broken the compact between the United States and the United States,” Abbott’s statement began. “The Executive Branch of the United States has a constitutional duty to enforce federal laws that protect the states, including the immigration laws currently in effect. President Biden has refused to enforce those laws and has even violated them. The result is that he has broken illegal immigration records.”
The governor’s statement followed the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to allow federal officials to remove barbed wire on the border installed by the state of Texas.
In other words, Border Patrol will actively remove state-imposed protections not only to protect the state but to protect the entire country, including sanctuary cities like this one.
The court’s ruling was obviously a tremendous provocation for the governor.
And I can’t think of a more serious threat to the political order in this country than what Biden, the Supreme Court, and Abbott have made a reality.
Because Abbott has turned to the most serious tool in any governor’s arsenal. These are no longer mere legal games.
What the governor is stating is that Texas is going to take matters into its own hands.
More than 6 million people have crossed the border in the last three years. Which, as Abbott has pointed out, is more than the population of 33 states in this country.
However, instead of helping Texas secure the border, the federal government has actually gone after Texas for doing so. He has taken the state to court for daring to try to secure the border.
And since the Biden administration has told border agencies to ignore laws requiring detention of illegal arrivals, the effect has been, as Abbott says, a “massive parole” to the United States.
It is these people who end up on the streets of this city and many other cities, from Chicago to San Francisco. It is these people who end up filling the hotels and hostels in our city.
It is these people who, at worst, commit crimes and, at best, undermine New York City workers by entering the black economy and flouting the Democrats’ own minimum wage laws. for the workers of this city.
So what Abbott has done may seem desperate, but it is also necessary.
He has declared what is happening “an invasion.” And he has activated articles that allow a state’s rights to self-defense and invoked Texas’ “constitutional authority to defend and protect itself.”
What’s more, he has said that from now on, the Texas National Guard, the Texas Department of Public Safety “and other Texas personnel” will act with this authority and with state law – not federal law – to protect the state. from Texas.
This is a very serious collapse of the political system of this country.
For a state governor to say that federal law has failed and that, as a result, his state is going to take matters into its own hands is extraordinary.
Except there is a precedent: all those cities and states that also broke with federal law in recent decades by declaring themselves sanctuary states and cities.
I suspect Abbott will receive quite a bit of criticism for his statement, in the courts and in the courts of elite opinion.
But where were those critics when left-wing politicians were boasting about the need to embrace the world’s poor and dispossessed?
Where was the condemnation when states and cities decided to unilaterally encourage more illegal migration to this country because they wanted to appear kind and compassionate?
The answer is: it was there. As in the statements of Joe Biden, the candidate, in 2007. And then nothing happened.
People could have condemned the “sanctuary state” announcements, but little or nothing was done about it.
And it never is. Because in the area of illegal migration, you never have to pay any price for encouraging it.
Real political pressure is only put on people like Abbott, who are trying to enforce the country’s laws.
Of course, when running for election, candidates like Biden will occasionally talk about a tough game.
But they act the other way around. It is as if the water of illegal migration only flows in one direction.
There is no other area of public life in which the decisions to be made are so difficult in the short term. And there is no political decision that is easier to postpone in the long term.
However, the postponement is exactly what makes it worse.
There is an ominous note surrounding Abbott’s statement. But it is also necessary.
And I hope that, amid all the criticism, people remember that it wasn’t Abbott who got America to this point.
It was Biden and all the other politicians who said one thing and then did another.
