A Chicago man enjoying a slice of pizza was savagely beaten and assaulted by two brutes in a brazen daylight attack caught on camera Monday, a day before the House Judiciary Committee visited the city to hear testimonies about how “soft on crime” policies have turned the Windy City into an “active war zone.”
The victim, an unidentified 33-year-old man, was walking down a residential alley in Bucktown around 2:55 pm when two men ran up to him from behind and brutally punched him in the head.
The victim collapsed face-first against a metal fence and screamed in surprise as his attackers began to hit him with their fists and feet.
“What the fuck!” she could be heard screaming. “Get off of me! Idiot!”
When the victim tried to resist, the fight spread through the alley and he managed to knock down one of the attackers, until the other attacker began to trample him with his feet.
“Let it go, let it go,” the attackers were heard saying as they tried to take the victim’s backpack, even as a car across the street honked in an apparent attempt to distract them.
The robbers eventually got hold of the bag and what appeared to be a cell phone, but still took one last stomp before calmly walking away.
The victim was happily eating a slice of pizza when his attackers ran up behind him and punched him in the head. The man tried to defend himself from his assailant.
The witness in the car across the street told CBS News that she stayed with the victim until police arrived and that, despite some bruising, she seemed fine.
Chicago police confirmed to The Post that the victim was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
No suspect has yet been identified, but five investigators have been assigned to the case.
The shocking random attack is the latest example of a city destroyed by rampant crime.
There has been a disturbing 29% increase in serious crimes, including murder, sexual assault, robbery, robbery and aggravated assault, so far this year, compared to the same period in 2022, according to data from the Chicago Police Department .
Thefts specifically are up 24% this year, compared to the same period last year.
Since 2019, there has been a staggering 54% increase in serious crimes across the city, according to the data.
The suspects attempted to take the victim’s backpack and dragged him down the alley. The attackers repeatedly stomped on the victim as she tried to fight them off.
Meanwhile, just a day after the violent robbery in Bucktown, the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee met in Chicago to hear testimony about how progressive policies have disregarded the crime epidemic.
The committee heard accounts from victims of violent crimes in the city, politicians and law enforcement officials.
“With all the policies and procedures in place, officers find themselves with their hands tied behind their backs,” testified Carlos Yáñez Jr., a retired Chicago police officer who was shot four times during a traffic stop, while his partner, Ella French , was murdered, WLS reported.
“Officers continue to pursue violent criminals, but we find them back on the street committing even more violent crimes, including murder,” he added.
Fox News contributor and political analyst Gianno Caldwell also testified, after the South Side native lost his little brother to gun violence in June 2022.
In a powerful speech, he blamed the “decriminalization of crimes,” progressive Cook County prosecutors “who refuse to prosecute,” and the city’s “no-prosecute policy” for police officers.
“These officials have recklessly ignored the people they were elected to represent and, as a result, bodies, mostly black, are strewn across the streets of Chicago,” he told lawmakers.
