EU postpones new requirements for US travelers until 2025

Americans viewed upcoming trips to European countries differently following the announcement of requirements for U.S. passport holders starting in 2024.

However, EU officials have delayed the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) until spring 2025.

Schengenvisainfo.com, a website dedicated to the world’s largest visa-free zone known as the Schengen Area, where 27 European countries abolished their internal borders, first reported that an EU official confirmed that ETIAS would not go live until May 2025, “due to continued delays in the implementation of the related entry-exit system (EES), which must be operational before ETIAS can be implemented.”

If you previously visited Europe without a visa, you must now apply for authorization through ETIAS before traveling.

According to the Henley Passport Index, American travelers can now enter visa-free to 184 global destinations.

And while the United States currently has the eighth most powerful passport, that may change when the European Union implements stricter documentation requirements for American travelers.

The application fee is 7 euros, or 7.79 US dollars, and will be available on the official ETIAS website as well as a mobile app. Email is used for all correspondence.

Once accepted for travel, visitors can stay in European countries that require ETIAS for up to 90 days within 180 days, and travelers must have a valid ETIAS for their entire stay.

According to ETIAS, most applications should be processed within minutes. Still, if an application takes longer, decisions will be delivered within four days or up to 14 days if additional documentation is requested.

The European Union recommends that travelers apply for ETIAS authorization “well before their planned trip.”

Confirmation of application submission will be provided via email, along with a unique number for future reference.

Travelers should verify their name, passport number and other information after obtaining ETIAS travel authorization because any errors will prevent them from crossing the border.

If a request is denied, an email will be sent with the reasons for the decision, as well as information on how to appeal.

According to the EU, the ETIAS travel authorization is valid for three years or until the travel document you used in your application expires, whichever comes first.

ETIAS authorization is related to a person’s travel document, such as a US passport, and both are required to board a plane, bus or ship to enter any of the European nations that require ETIAS.

The ETIAS authorization, like the international border criteria with a passport, does not guarantee the automatic right of entry. According to the EU, “border guards will verify that you meet the entry conditions,” and anyone who does not meet them “will be denied entry.”
