Fisherman dies after great white shark bites his leg while diving for scallops

A young fisherman diving for scallops in the Pacific Ocean off the Mexican coast was mauled and killed by a 13-foot-long great white shark, authorities said.

The victim, identified by local media as Víctor Alejandro Soto García, 22, was attacked by the super predator on December 29 in the Gulf of California, near Playa Tojahui, a beach in the town of Huatabampo, Sonora state, according to to the Diario de Noticias de México.

He was freediving when a great white shark estimated to be 13 feet long ripped off his left leg, according to reports.

“The young man’s body was taken by his fellow fishermen to the Yavaros dock,”said the Sonora Civil Protection agency, CEPC.
