According to officials, 27 bodies, including seven soldiers, have so far been pulled out of the mud and debris of the Teesta river flash flood that hit Sikkim, while the search for the remaining 142 people continues. The remains of seven of the 23 army men who were reported missing in Bardang have been found at several places downstream of the Teesta, while one has already been found alive. According to ANI sources, the third Indian reserve battalion is currently on its way for the rescue operation.
A storm on Lake Lhonak generated a flash flood on the Teesta River, which diverted towards the Chungthang Dam and destroyed electrical infrastructure before moving downstream in floodwaters and devastating cities and towns. More than 25,000 people have been affected by the flash flooding, caused by a downpour in the early hours of Wednesday. It also destroyed more than 1,200 homes and washed away 13 bridges, bringing the picturesque Himalayan state to its knees. According to PTI reports, 2,413 people have been rescued from various places so far and 6,875 people are finding shelter in 22 relief camps that have been set up across the state but are largely cut off from the rest of the nation.
Prem Singh Tamang, the chief minister, declared an emergency relief of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 2,000 for all those taking shelter in the camps. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has authorized disbursement of Rs 44.8 crore as advance from State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to help the needy. Thirteen bridges were destroyed by the flood in the state, eight of which were lost in Mangan district. Two bridges in Namchi and three in Gangtok were destroyed. According to senior sources cited by PTI, the Air Force made numerous attempts to send Mi-17 helicopters to rescue the around 3,000 tourists stranded in north Sikkim, but failed in all cases due to bad weather.
