Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Wins ‘America First’ Primary Challenge

Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s month of October began with his historic ouster from the House Speakership.

It’s ending a challenge from a self-proclaimed Donald Trump acolyte who wants to oust the veteran lawmaker from Congress.

Sports card dealer David Giglio announced his campaign for the Republican nomination in California’s 20th District on Monday by praising the eight Republicans who took the gavel from McCarthy on Oct. 3.

“After years of selling out to special interests, the people of the Central Valley deserve an America First Republican who will fight for them in Washington and work alongside President Donald Trump to WAGE WAR against the corrupt one-party!” Giglio said in a statement.

Giglio, a Connecticut native, owns CaliCards & More in Clovis, a Fresno suburb about 120 miles north of Bakersfield, McCarthy’s former home, according to his campaign biography.

McCarthy (R-Calif.), 58, has represented the ruby red region since 2007, 16 years in which he steadily climbed the ladder of House GOP leadership before becoming speaker in January.

“Kevin McCarthy was removed as president by 8 brave members of his party for failing to keep his promises and capitulating to Joe Biden and the radical Democrats. “Kevin McCarthy must be defeated,” Giglio’s announcement continued.

McCarthy was deposed when the handful of Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) voted with 208 Democrats to fire him.

Gaetz and company said they were upset by McCarthy’s decision to introduce a stopgap measure to prevent a partial government shutdown on September 30. However, McCarthy has insisted that Gaetz’s personal animosity played a role.

The Californian was the first speaker of the House of Representatives in US history to be formally ousted by a motion to vacate the presidency, leaving the lower house paralyzed for 22 days before a new leader was elected.

Ultimately, Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected president on October 25, after three other Republican-appointed speakers withdrew their nominations.

Shortly after his fall, McCarthy declared his intention to remain in Congress and run for re-election, despite not attempting to regain the gavel.

“Now more than ever, it is imperative that we replace career politicians and elect America First Republicans who will secure the southern border, stop the militarization of government, drain the corrupt swamp and annihilate permanent Washington,” Giglio said Monday .

McCarthy’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The former president is widely considered a fundraising giant for Republican House candidates.

Given that fundraising prowess, as well as McCarthy’s widespread name recognition, Giglio will likely face an uphill battle to unseat McCarthy.
