Glenn Youngkin was born on December 9, 1966 in Richmond, Virginia. His parents were Ellis (née Quinn) and Carroll Wayne Youngkin. His father had played basketball at Duke University and had also worked in accounting and finance. When Glenn Youngkin was a teenager, he and his family moved to Virginia Beach. He completed his education at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, Virginia and graduated in 1985. While in high school, he had received many honors in basketball. On a basketball scholarship, Glenn Youngkin entered Rice University in Houston, Texas. He played a total of 3 seasons for the Owls in the Southwest Conference. He had career totals of 82 points and 67 rebounds. In 1990, Glenn completed his graduation in management studies and bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Later, in 1994, he graduated from Harvard Business School with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

After graduating from Rice in 1990, Glenn Youngkin worked at the investment bank First Boston, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets financing. The company was later purchased by Credit Suisse and became known as Credit Suisse First Boston. Glenn left the company in 1992 to pursue an MBA. After completing the course, he joined McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm. In 1995, he joined a Washington, DC-based private equity firm called The Carlyle Group as part of the US acquisitions team. Later, in 1999, he became partner and managing director of the firm. In April 2008, Glenn Youngkin was asked to step down as a dealmaker to focus on the company’s broader strategy. In 2009, he chaired a seven-person operating committee that ran the company’s daily operations. After Carlyle Group’s founders resigned to remain as board chairmen in October 2017, Glenn Younkin along with Kewsong Lee were named co-CEOs. Glenn led the firm’s global credit and corporate private equity businesses. Both Glenn and Kewsong later joined the board of directors. In January 2021 he announced his candidacy for governor of Virginia. He used his personal wealth to finance his candidacy. On May 10, 2021, at the state party convention, he won the nomination, defeating six fellow candidates.
