After Carlyle Group’s founders resigned to remain as board chairmen in October 2017, Glenn Younkin along with Kewsong Lee were named co-CEOs. Glenn led the firm’s global credit and corporate private equity businesses. Both Glenn and Kewsong later joined the board of directors. In January 2021 he announced his candidacy for governor of Virginia. He used his personal wealth to finance his candidacy. On May 10, 2021, at the state party convention, he won the nomination, defeating six fellow candidates.
