The hand-sized Pride flag was seen in a promotional video The Chosen released on Sunday, May 28. Twitter user @accabat also claimed that one of the show’s cinematographers was seen wearing a Pride T-shirt while filming. For the inexperienced, The Chosen is a popular multi-series show that portrays the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. The first two seasons of the show were produced on a budget of $45 million that the production company raised through crowdfunding. The third season premiered late last year and concluded in February.
The historical drama is created by Dallas Jenkins with Jonathan Roumie playing Jesus. The boycott against the hit show comes amid the ongoing cancellation of several companies that have shown support for the LGBTQ community. Beer giant Budweiser was the first among many that were apparently canceled for collaborating with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Since then, several brands, including Target, Kohl’s, Adidas, Calvin Klein, and Build-A-Bear, among others, have come under fire. Netizens continued to share screenshots of tweets where people defended the cast and crew of the show.
Conservative supporters of the television series were infuriated and vowed never to watch the show again. Many went on to claim that God does not support the LGBTQ community. The chosen one took to their official Twitter account and announced that they have a diverse cast and crew. They also assured that they are willing to work with whoever wants to portray the authentic version of Jesus. Filmmaker Jenkins has also been open from the start about hiring people of all faiths to create the show.
