Why is McDonald’s using Google AI?
McDonald’s will be able to use generative AI on big data to optimize operations, in addition to updates to other systems, such as ordering kiosks and the company’s mobile app.
According to the corporation, at least one of the effects will be “hotter, fresher food” for customers. Big orders of fries served by great language models? It’s unclear what that entails, but we can read between the lines and predict that more AI-powered automation will be available in a drive-thru near you in the coming years.
What does McDonald’s have to say?
McDonald’s statement also sidesteps the issue of AI replacing human labor, simply stating that the technology will “reduce complexity” for store staff and “drive exciting new experiences for staff and customers.” Wendy’s, another Google Cloud AI user, took a similar stance when it began testing AI ordering earlier this year. As of June, it was only available at one store in Columbus, Ohio, so the verdict is still out.
What does the future look like?
Still, there is a strong smell of “robots replacing human workers” in the air. The push into generative AI coincides with the launch of a new “tailor-made” operating system to unify the experience on McDonald’s mobile app and in-store kiosks.
According to McD’s, the modifications would result in “more informed testing and automated solutions to improve restaurant operations.” Drake’s Fake Self-Service Attendants? Chatbots for McRibs? It’s hard to say. In any case, we won’t know for a while if anyone is actually enjoying it.
