Portland boy, 6, fatally mauled by friend’s dogs while getting ready for school

A 6-year-old Oregon boy was killed Tuesday by two dogs at a family friend’s house as the boy was getting ready for school.

Police were met at the door by a woman covered in blood after being called to the horrific scene at the Portland home shortly after 7.40am.

The woman, an unnamed friend of the boy’s grandmother, told officers that her large Great Dane-mastiff mix jumped on the boy after he followed her into the garage of her home, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

“We understand that the owner of the house/dog did everything in her power to stop this attack, at one point even grabbing a gun; she never went that far,” PPB Public Information Officer Mike Benner said. to Fox 12.

“She did everything she could to save this child’s life.”

The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The family friend was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries to her hands.

According to authorities, his grandmother had dropped the boy off at the dog owner’s house to take him to school, a daily arrangement between families.

The boy had previously been told to stay away from the dogs and the garage they were in because they were dangerous, police said.

Authorities said there were no previous reports that the dogs had ever been a problem.

Although both dogs were involved in the attack, one has since been labeled the “main aggressor.”

The couple has been taken into the custody of Multnomah County Animal Services.

It is not yet clear if the family friend will face charges for the tragic attack. He allegedly grabbed a gun during the fight, but did not fire, Benner said.

“I speak for everyone in the office when I say our hearts break for this child, for his family, for his friends. I mean, every time something like this happens it’s a shock to the conscience, but for this to happen just a few weeks before Christmas is unimaginable,” Benner said.

PPB’s Child Abuse Team is leading the investigation with assistance from the Homicide Division.
