Where is this town located?

Piplantri is a village in the Rajsamand district of the Indian state of Rajasthan. Piplantri residents plant 111 seedlings every time a girl is born, and the community ensures that these trees bloom and bear fruit as the girls grow.

When does it start?

To ensure a girl’s financial security, villagers pool their collective contributions of Rs 21,000, take Rs 10,000 from parents and deposit it in a fixed deposit that can be redeemed when the girl turns 20.

Furthermore, to ensure that the girl receives a proper education, the villagers force her parents to sign an affidavit, preventing them from marrying her before she reaches the legal age for marriage.

Why do they do it?

Shyam Sundar Paliwal, a former sarpanch (village head), spearheaded this effort in memory of his daughter Kiran, who died many years ago.

Thanks to the efforts made in 2006, the settlement of Piplantri has now become an oasis. The town’s economy has also benefited from the project.

To keep pests at bay, the village has planted almost 2.5 million aloe vera plants around fruit trees. Little by little people discovered that there were numerous ways to process and sell aloe vera.

How is it going?

As a result, the community now produces and distributes aloe-based products, such as juices and gels. For fifteen years, this has been a deep-rooted custom in this neighborhood, which contributes to the increase in greenery.
