What happened in Madhya Pradesh?
The story takes an unexpected turn when the police arrest one of the suspected rodents while another disappears from the scene. Meanwhile, it is unknown whether the rats were the masterminds behind the alcohol consumption.
The seized bottles were evidence in an illicit liquor case, and now that the evidence has been destroyed, officials face a difficult task proving their case. The local police officially informed the court that the rodents damaged 60 bottles of country liquor kept in the evidence room of Kotwali police station.
Who found out about this unusual incident?
Responding to the incident, station manager Umesh Gohlani told the Times of India: “These small rural liquor bottles are made of plastic and rodents chew on them, damaging the liquor.” We prepare a panchnama report as per procedure and submit it to the court for consideration. The court normally looks at genuine issues. Evidence, such as empty bottles, must be present.”
“Our police station is in an old building and many seized items are kept there.” Rodents are a danger. We take precautions to trap them and release them elsewhere. “We also caught some after this case,” he continued.
How did the authorities react?
Surprisingly, no other objects in the room were destroyed, raising new concerns. Meanwhile, Umesh Gohlani spoke about additional safeguards put in place to protect evidence.
He added that seized marijuana or hemp is kept in iron trunks to minimize damage from rodents. Files and other documents, on the other hand, are stored high to prevent rodents from accessing them.
Rats have caused disturbances not only at Kotwali police station but also at other government facilities in Chhindwara. Among the offices infested by these rats are the district hospital, the collection building and the education department.
The rodents reportedly devoured vital documents and even corpses.
According to ETV, Chhindwara District Hospital spends a lot of money every year trying to catch rats, but the irritating rodents continue to ruin essential records.
Rats have been held responsible for the disappearance of alcohol in several other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Tamil Nadu, apart from Chhindwara. Watch the video here.
