Samudrayaan Mission
Samudrayaan Mission is a special mission as it is India’s first manned ocean mission. It is a fragment of the Deep Ocean Mission. As part of the mission, three explorers were sent 6 kilometers deep into the ocean in a vehicle called “Matsya 6000.” The main objective of the mission is the exploration of deep sea resources. The operated submersible will allow scientists to study and examine uncharted deep-sea areas through different interpositions.

The operation aims to sustain the Blue Economy Initiatives of the government of India. As you know, India, with its three sides enclosed by oceans, and 30% of the country’s population lives in coastal areas. Hence, coastal areas play a key economic factor.
The projected cost of the mission over five years will be Rs 4,077 crore. The first phase of the mission will be completed soon, which will last for three years (2021-2024), and the cost would be around Rs 2,823.4 crore.
The completion of the “Samudrayaan” project will allow India to join developed countries in prospecting for ocean resources.

The Ministry of Finance had intended to grant final permission to the project in October 2019, however, due to a delay, it was granted on June 16, 2021. On August 31, 2019, Dr. MA Atmanand, then director of NIOT, revealed about the Samudrayaan Mission. Although the mission was launched under the guidance of Union State Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh.
. The ‘staff sphere’, constructed of mild steel, was tested informally by NIOT in the Bay of Bengal on October 27, 2021, using the ORV Sagar Nidhi. Off the coast of Chennai, the personal sphere called MATSYA 6000 was launched for testing at a depth of 600 meters. Following successful testing, the mission received certification and the project was finally launched on October 29, 2021.

Samudrayaan Mission Vehicle Details
The vehicle in which the three personnel were sent to the deep sea is codenamed “MATSYA 6000.” It is designed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai. It has a resilience of 12 hours in case of regular operation and 96 hours in crisis.
Mild steel was used to construct the Personnel Sphere, which has a diameter of 2.1 meters and can serve as a crew module up to 500 meters deep. It was tested in the Bay of Bengal in October 2021 using the Sagar Nidhi research vessel to a depth of 600 metres.
