A pro-Palestinian speaker called for “normalizing massacres” during a demonstration in London on Saturday in support of a ceasefire in Gaza, prompting police to investigate the matter.
Pro-Palestinian supporters had marched through central London as part of a global day of action against Israeli military action against Hamas in Gaza.
Video has circulated on social media of a speaker, Palestinian activist Mohammed el-Kurd, addressing a crowd gathered in Parliament Square.
“I dare you to look into the eyes of a child from Gaza and tell him that you did the best you could,” he told the crowd. “Our day will come. But we must not be complacent. Our day will come. But we must normalize massacres as a status quo.”
El-Kurd later responded to backlash over his statement about normalizing the massacres in X, writing that he “would never say that.”
“I was clearly saying that we should not be complacent, we should not normalize massacres,” he wrote. “Intentionally distorting my words is an indication of your own bankruptcy. I’m allowed to speak badly. Also: idagf. Call the police! Write a review on Yelp!

London police issued a statement about X saying authorities were aware of the video and comments.
“Officers are aware of the comments, surrounding comments and subsequent statements issued by the speaker,” the Metropolitan Police said. “They are assessing the matter and as part of that assessment they will attempt to speak to the person concerned.”
Despite claiming he was wrong in that case, videos posted online show that el-Kurd’s speech also directly called for extinguishing Zionism from the world.

“Zionism is apartheid, it is genocide, it is murder, it is a racist ideology rooted in settler expansion and racial domination, and we must eradicate it from the world,” el-Kurd said.
Obviously I’m not an idiot and I would never say that. She was clearly saying that we should not be complacent, we should not normalize massacres. He continued: “We must de-Zionize ourselves because Zionism is a death cult, Zionism is indefensible.”

Hamas terrorists launched the deadly attack on October 7, killing about 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians.
About 250 more were taken hostage and, although some have been released or confirmed dead, more than half are believed to remain captive in Gaza.
