Utah homeowner’s ‘pole dancing skeleton’ Halloween display sparks controversy

A strange Halloween decoration in a Utah community has sparked a debate. It led to a debate about freedom of expression, social norms and cultural sensitivity, and was the result of a homeowner’s decision to display a “pole dancing skeleton” in his garden.

People decorate their homes and yards in spooky and whimsical looks during Halloween, but in this case, the homeowner chose a pole dancing skeleton for his holiday decorations. This is what happened.

Who is behind all this?

Christopher Fujishin, who lives in Grantsville, Utah, is the man who chose this unique Halloween display.

What happened?

The Ogdenite, a local news source, uploaded an Instagram image of a Utah homeowner who had a cheeky skeleton outside his home. The article said city officials were dissatisfied with the resident’s actions.

Two additional skeletons can be seen witnessing the humorous situation in the screenshot initially posted by Grantsville City’s official Facebook account, but which has since been deleted.

In its comment above the image, the city of Grantsville wrote: “The person responsible for this display must remove their decorations by 9 pm tonight, October 18, or the city will remove them.”

Why did this happened?

City officials said in a Facebook post that using the street sign as a dance pole at the display was against city ordinance.

The statement in the since-deleted post said the owner of the decorations had until nine p.m. to remove them, or they would be removed.

After Fujishin relocated the skeletons to his yard, neighbors who had seen the widely shared post around town began stopping by and adding their decorations to the display, which is now complete with lights and music.

Fujishin told KSTU-TV: “We hope to continue this and get a little more elaborate as we go.”

How did the man respond to the reaction to his Halloween display?

In an interview with Fox 13 News Utah, Fujishin acknowledged that her Halloween arrangement might be a little “racy” for some people, but that it was “all in the name of fun.”

The skeleton pole dance is considered inappropriate for children, but the owner dismissed this criticism. “If your kids understand what that is, maybe the problem isn’t the skeleton dancing on the pole; maybe it’s something else,” Fujishin said.

Another video showed a neighbor repeatedly trying to cut up the skeleton.

To avoid further complaints, the owner removed the skeleton of the street sign after the city notice was posted and moved the display to his lawn.
