Woman’s 5-foot mullet lands Guinness World Record: It’s been growing for 33 years

That’s a pretty long holiday back for a Tennessee woman.

Knoxville nurse Tami Manis held the Guinness World Record for the longest mullet on any woman, with her luxurious locks measuring 5 feet, 8 inches long.

“I’ve been lucky enough to grow my hair and now it’s the longest mullet in the world and I’m very happy with it,” said Manis, a public health nurse who serves in the Tennessee State Guard.

He began growing his hair in the 1980s, after watching the music video for the song “Voices Carry” from ‘Til Tuesday’.

In that video, the singer defends her hair and takes care that her boyfriend makes derogatory comments to her.

“The girl had a rat tail and I really wanted one of those,” said Manis, 58.

But when he went to a local barber in November 1989, the barber told him the style didn’t suit him and he decided to cut it off.

However, Manis immediately regretted his decision and began growing it back on February 9, 1990, a date he now considers his mullet’s birthday.

He hasn’t cut it since.

Since then, the style has become almost synonymous with Manis, and the nurse says people remember her specifically for her unique style.

“The strangest thing I find is that people remember me from years ago,” he told Guinness. “People recognize me from 20 years ago because I keep the same hairstyle.”

The mullet has also become a topic of conversation among his friends and family, he said, noting that, true to form, most people don’t realize how long his hair is until it’s flipped over. .

Manis attributes his luxurious locks to good genetics.

But to keep it up, she washes her hair with Hask hair care products, including an argan oil conditioner and a leave-in conditioner.

Once she’s done washing and conditioning her hair, Manis says she dries her hair with paper towels so it doesn’t get wet.

Her friend would then come over to braid her hair once a week so she wouldn’t trip over it, and Manis said it will stay in that style until the next time she washes it.

“Most of the time people around me know it’s braided and, at the time, it’s still very impressive,” he said.

Manis has attempted to win awards for her signature look in the past, competing in the “Femullet” division of the 2022 United States Mullet Championships last year. The contest is the largest of its kind in the world and each year more than 1,000 applicants participate.

Unfortunately, Manis only took home the $300 second-place prize, losing to Alexa Lindsey of Holland, Michigan, who won the $500 top prize.

But soon after, Guinness announced it would open the “longest competitive mullet” as a world record prize, and she was encouraged to apply.

After having several conversations with a company representative, a photographer met her at her Knoxville home while a cameraman recorded a judge measuring the length of her hair.

He said he only found out he had won when he received a package at his door with an official certificate from Guinness World Records.

“I confirmed it with the gentleman at Guinness World Records and then double-checked that I’m actually in the 2024 edition of Guinness World Records for longest mullet, and that’s pretty amazing!” manis said.
