How does this work?

Ten participants watched ten different horror movies while wearing devices that measured their heart rate, oxygen intake, and carbon dioxide production as part of a study funded by Lovefilm.

What did the study reveal?

The findings were intriguing: Participants’ heart rates and metabolism increased while watching horror movies, leading to greater calorie burning. Calories burned during a 90-minute horror movie averaged about 150 calories, with variations depending on the movie and individual factors.

The study also identified the ten highest-calorie horror movies, with The Shining (184 calories), Jaws (161 calories), and The Exorcist (158 calories) leading the way.

These films often included scary moments, raising viewers’ heart rates and adrenaline levels.

Dr Richard Mackenzie, senior lecturer and specialist in metabolism and cellular physiology at the University of Westminster, clarified that the rapid release of adrenaline due to short bursts of intense stress, such as fear induced by horror films, is known to suppress the appetite. , increases basal metabolic rate and ultimately results in more calories burned.
