Oakland pizzeria workers fight criminals with hammer and recycling bin after 4 robberies in last month leave business in danger: video

Workers at an Oakland pizzeria that is in danger of closing after being robbed four times this year took matters into their own hands last week, fighting the latest offender to break in, according to a report.

Cybelle’s Pizza employees can be seen in security footage trying to fend off a robber with a hammer around 10:30 p.m. on Friday night, KGO reported.

After appearing to scare off the robber, he quickly returns and reaches for the cash register above the counter, as the clip obtained by Fox LA shows. A desperate cook suddenly throws a recycling bin at him from before he fled.

“They tried to rob the cash register… my employees were very, very brave… I told them not to do that… but they had to defend themselves,” owner Elizabeth Sanchez told the outlet.

The thief was arrested shortly after.

Friday’s robbery was the fourth such incident in just over a month.

Sanchez said she has had trouble retaining employees as a result of increased crime in the area, which she said also keeps customers away.

She and her husband, who work seven days a week, are considering closing their restaurant in Oakland. They would keep their other location in San Francisco, she said.

“Sales are down because no one wants to go out, they fear for their safety,” Sánchez told KGO. “We have seen a drop in sales and we are worse than during the pandemic.”

He said his restaurant is one of several small businesses in the area that are affected by the increase in crime.

“All business owners need help. In and out, Dennys, those are big chains, but what about us small businesses? Where we are? For me, as an immigrant, this was the American dream. But now, where is he? Sanchez asked.

The mayor’s office said two small businesses were recently awarded $20,000 for repairs as part of their Facade and Tenant Improvement Program and will work with Cybelle’s on something similar.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that he would send 120 California Highway Patrol officers to Oakland to help fight crime.
